Why is the Differential Important?

The differential is responsible for the wheels’ turning ability in a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle. It is the harness that allows each wheel to turn at a different speed. By using a set of gears, the differential makes it possible for the wheels to work together.

In a left turn situation, for example, the wheels closest to the turn, left in this instance, are the inside wheels. The opposite side here would be the outside. The outside wheels are required to travel a greater distance, and at a faster speed, to keep up with the inner wheels. The differential makes that travel and speed difference possible in order to provide a smooth turn.
